Well-known 5* judge, the British Stephen Clarke, passed away on June 13th.
Stephen's equestrian story began in his childhood in a small Welsh village. He became a judge in his early twenties, tired, as he himself put it, "of hearing everyone complain about the judging." Also a rider, he trained under Ernst Bachinger at the Spanish Riding School, thanks to the guidance of Jennie Loriston-Clarke and Ferdi Eilberg. With his horse Becket, he was even selected as an alternate for the British dressage team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. A five-time national champion, he represented Great Britain in CDI competitions throughout the 1980s.
As respected judge, Stephen Clarke also officiated at numerous international championships, notably as President of the Jury for the 2012 London Olympic Games, and as a member of the jury for the 2004 Athens and 2016 Rio Games.
Elected to the FEI in 2013, succeeding Ghislain Fouarge, the Briton served on the FEI Dressage Commission for several years and played a key role in developing the Judge's Manual, now considered the standard for modern judging.
Stephen Clarke died of cancer at the age of 73.
