The FEI unveils updated tests for 2027
As part of its strategic plan for dressage, the FEI has recently undertaken a review of its dressage tests across all levels.
The proposed changes were evaluated, notably through real testing in Warendorf, Germany. The new tests will come into effect on January 1, 2027, for all FEI competitions. This timeline will coincide with the opening of the qualification period for Minimum Eligibility Requirements (MER) for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Notable updates to the Grand Prix test include the introduction of a 20-meter circle at the trot, where the rider allows the horse to stretch its neck on long reins before resuming contact. This exercise, already a included in young horse tests, is added to assess suppleness, the quality of the contact, and the horse's ability to maintain its balance while stretching its neck. The Grand Prix test now comprises 34 movements. A half-circle at the trot, following the same principle, has also been included into the Prix St. Georges test with a coefficient of 2.
For the Grand Prix Special, the 2027 version adds a new requirement to the collected canter: releasing and retaking the reins for three to four strides.
Regarding the Young Horse classes, the trot half-passes in the 7-Year-Old Final now carry a coefficient of 2.
