Bad patch for Hubertus Schmidt: the German rider has been the victim of a serious accident.

Born in 1959, Hubertus Schmidt amassed over the years one of the most impressive records in German dressage, especially with Wansuela Suerte, with whom he was Olympic Team Champion in Athens (video 1) and 3rd in the World Cup Final in Düsseldorf in 2004, European Team Champion and Individual European Vice-Champion in Hagen in 2005, World Team Champion in Aachen in 2006. Among his many other horses brought or ridden in Grand Prix (editor's note: probably more than 70!), we can mention: Playboy, Aramis, My Fair Lady, Imperio, Escolar or even Denoix and Beryll with whom he participated in his last international. Trained in the past by Siegfried Peilike, Jan Bemelmanns, Reiner Klimke, Harry Boldt, Albert Stecken, Rudolf Zeilinger, Klaus Balkenhol, and Holger Schmezer, Hubertus Schmidt is also a renowned coach, an activity to which he now focus on. His (former) students include Emma Kanerva, Minna Telde, Marcus Hermes, Patrik Kittel, and Dong Seon Kim.

After falling from an 8-year-old horse on March 23rd and being hospitalized, the 67-year-old rider underwent surgery to stabilize fractures to his collarbone, ribs, and pelvis. He will have another operation next Monday. Hubertus Schmidt ended his competitive career in 2023 and now trains, in particular, Katharina Hemmer, the rider of his stables.
