Hans Jansen passed away

Renowned Dutch stallion breeder Hans Jansen has died.

Wynton, Bretton Woods, Chagall, Four Legends, and Gaudi—these are the stallions bred by Hans Jansen and his wife; a remarkable breeding success for a man who has now passed away at the age of 85.

After working as an orthodontist in Apeldoorn, Hans Jansen devoted himself entirely to breeding dressage horses. Together with his wife, Grietje, he frequently traveled to deepen their breeding knowledge; their passion for dressage horses took them to Germany in the early 1990s, a time when the discipline's breeding sector was experiencing a golden age. It was at the Vechta auctions that they acquired the mares Aktionella and Annabel, the foundation mares of their breeding program. These mares produced Wynton, Bretton Woods, Chagall, Four Legends, and Gaudi. The Jansen family also achieved success at mare inspections, notably with the Dutch champion Ostara. In 2011, he was named Breeder of the Year by the KWPN.

Although recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hans Jansen was nonetheless closely following the results of Four Legends—ridden by Austria's Felicita Simonic—at the World Championships in Aachen. Sadly, he passed away on Sunday morning.
